A 14-year veteran Orbis Volunteer, Dr. Lai views screening sessions as a chance to transform patients' futures and happily shares his skills so doctors and nurses in under-resourced countries and regions can do the same.
In May last year, he was part of the team at the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital project in Vietnam. During this sight-saving journey, one of his most profound experience was performing surgery on a 17-year-old girl whose right retina was found completely detached while her left eye has over 900 degrees of myopia with retina tears - which may result in vision loss and a high risk of retinal detachment. Dr. Lai immediately arranged laser surgery which successfully saved the girl's remaining vision.
If not been diagnosed and treated in time, Dr. Lai estimated the girl's left eye retina would have fully detached resulted in complete blindness within three to six months.
"She’s only 17 years old, like my son. The long-term consequences of her condition would have been disatrous, as she has yet to finish her studies and would struggle to find a job later on as a result," said Dr. Lai
Over the past nine years, thanks to the benevolent support from our donors, partners, and Volunteer Faculty, Orbis has completed over 490,000 training sessions for eye care professionals in underserved communities, empowering them to better serve their communities and save precious sight.
Many have even gone on to take on the role of trainers, passing on their knowledge and acquired skills to the next generation of eye care professionals. This sustainable development of local ophthalmic services offers long-term impact to safeguard eye health of children and adults, ensuring more people will not have to live with preventable blindness.
